RM, South Africa

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is RM and I am currently a student at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa. In 2005 I was afforded the opportunity of studying in the United States at Bard College for one year. As part of the selection process for this opportunity, I was interviewed by Mr. Carlton Rounds. As an interviewer, Mr. Rounds was extremely adept at allowing me to realize certain things about myself that I otherwise would not have noticed. Upon arrival at Bard College, I was informed that Mr. Rounds had resigned. However, he made contact with me and throughout my year at Bard College, he continuously enquired as to my adjustment and well being.

My time at Bard College was also a time in which I was able to explore my sexuality. I come from a very conservative Muslim background and it was difficult for me to negotiate my sexuality with that background. Fortunately for me, Mr. Rounds is a good listener who is empathetic and has the ability to not only offer advice, but more importantly, provide information. An example of this was when I wanted to get myself tested for HIV. I had no idea where to go and what to do. Mr. Rounds not only gave me information, but accompanied me when I went for the test. His support throughout that ‘ordeal’ is most appreciated.

There were occasions where I found myself ‘lost’ in terms of being involved with someone and allowing the relationship to consume me thereby letting my studies suffer the consequences. Mr. Rounds continuously stressed the importance of my education and assisted me in not loosing sight of that.

Any institution would benefit with Mr. Rounds being apart of its organization, specifically institutions that have contact with young people that are negotiating their sexuality together with pursuing an education. From personal experience, guidance is necessary and Mr. Rounds is extremely competent in that regard. Furthermore Mr. Rounds has a deep sense of commitment, integrity and honesty. That combined with many other positive attributes makes him ideal for a position in which he is able to assist young people.

Yours sincerely
