Recommendation from Former NAFSA President

Recommendation from Connie Perdreau,
Former President of NAFSA

New Paltz Center for International Programs

June 20, 2014

To Whom lt May Concern:

This is a letter of recommendation for Carlton Rounds, international educator. It is my distinct pleasure to recommend Carlton Rounds for a position in your educational institution or organization.
Mr. Rounds worked in the Center for International Programs at the State University of New York (SUNY), New Paltz, from 2007 until 2011. I served on the Search Committee which selected Mr. Rounds for the position as Assistant Director for Study Abroad, and | collaborated with him on a number of subsequent projects and initiatives while at New Paltz.

My reference for Mr. Rounds stems from my extensive experience of nearly 40 years in the field of international educational exchange and my former position as president of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, at which time l dealt with literally several thousand professionals with similar experience and background in international education. I currently hold the position of Director of the Haggerty English Language Program (English as a Second Language) at SUNY New Paltz, and l am Director Emerita of Education Abroad at Ohio University, an office which sent over 1,200 students abroad annually.
First of all, Mr. Rounds' title of Assistant Director for Study Abroad" while at SUNY New Paltz does not accurately reflect the responsibilities of his position. He did not assist a director in the same office unit, but reported directly to the Dean in the capacity of head of study abroad programs and opportunities.

Mr. Rounds was responsible for an office in which several area coordinators, advisors, and staff reported directly to him, and, under his vision, the office was reorganized and invigorated to form an entire network of student peer advisors who spread the word about study abroad opportunities available to them, no matter what their financial situations were. He made it seem possible to those who thought it impossible, and the results were amazing. (I should note here, for your information, that the position title has been rectified and that Mr. Rounds' successor now has the title of Director of Study Abroad.)

Moreover, I can say with complete confidence that Mr. Rounds offers the quintessence of professionalism and dedication to the ideals of international education, study abroad, educational exchange and cross-cultural knowledge and understanding. He was a dynamic presence in the Study Abroad office at SUNY New Paltz, always analytical in approach, addressing challenging situations, and then going forth to resolve problematic areas in innovative ways.
Mr. Rounds always impressed me by clearly demonstrating his ability to be a team player, working well with those reporting to him, those working with him, and those he reported to. He was truly a pleasure.
